Before I say much of anything about our plans, please know that we submit all our plans, goals, and dreams before God's throne of grace. I have worked with enough churches and mission points to know that you have to be flexible in how you proceed. Paul wanted to travel on to Galatia but God made it clear he was needed in Macedonia. While we have very specific and detailed plans for our work in Panama, we also know that we will have to make some adjustments along the way. Some things may take longer than expected, other doors may open within the country to allow our work to prosper in ways we had never imagined. All this to say, we are open to God's guidance as we proceed in this work. We know that "he is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us" (Ephesians 3:20).
Phase One: We plan to arrive in Panama early in 2024, enroll in a language immersion program (we know some Spanish, but still have some work to do), and begin holding Bible studies and worship services in our home. We have already met with some expats in Panama who are open to joining us in our time of Bible study and worship and we are excited to use this as a launching point for the work. As this initial phase develops, we will invite our expat partners to join us in beginning phase two of reaching out to the local Panamanian people through the Let's Start Talking program.
Phase Two: Once we become more comfortable with the language, we will begin reaching out to the Panamanian people. This will include teaching the gospel while providing English language studies through the Let's Start Talking program. There is a strong desire to learn English because it opens the job markets for Panamanians (especially in the hospitality industries). In addition we will engage in humanitarian activities in local towns and villages, and we will get involved in local market days, charitable work, and other areas where we can share the love of Jesus.
Our goal is to become part of the local community and culture. Our prayer is to share the gospel with them by becoming friends and good neighbors in the community. We are guests in their country and look forward to also learning the customs and practices unique to Panama. In this way, we believe we can have the greatest impact on our Panamanian neighbors.
Phase Three: is to bring the Panamanian and Expat community together in worshipping and serving God within a single congregation. This is being done in other regions of Panama and we are confident in can be successfully replicated.
Additional Efforts: Over the past several months we have also spoken with several organizations that we hope to partner with in our efforts. Some of these are humanitarian groups that offer special programs for developing areas of the world, others are mission teams who have indicated an interest in campaign work, and some are publishers who provide teaching videos and literature in the Spanish language.
Each step of the way we will gauge what is work and what is ineffective as we strive to share Jesus with the world. We hope you will continue to pray for us, and if possible come and visit us in Panama (it is an easy two hour flight from Florida).
